I need your help. And I need you not to laugh!

It's been said that I am a little bit strange.
My boys Some have said I'm a dork.
I like to think I'm quirky.
Quirky sounds fun-loving and kinda cute. So yep, Quirky it is.

Anyway... I sing.
No, you don't understand... I sing a LOT.
I sing to wake up my darling young-folk. (this may be why they are so grumpy in the mornings)
I sing in the shower.
I sing in the car.
You just never know when or where I'll randomly break into song.

This would not be anything strange if I had a pleasant singing voice, But alas.. I was not blessed with good pipes.
The evil Worker #1 actually recorded me yesterday morning and told me that I should let you hear it and see if you agree with them that my singing to wake them up from their peaceful slumber could be considered child abuse. (the ungrateful little turd!)
You can here my cheerful waking up routine below. (If you dare)

That wasn't so bad now was it??
I, for one, would love to be wakened with such a melodious greeting!
ThankYouVeryMuch!

Anyway... the Little-Foreman-in-Pink has inherited my ability to turn any occasion into an opera.
She sings all the time! So, I have been trying to remember all of my childhood songs and teaching them to her.
I am at a loss...
I know that there are lots I have forgotten...

Here is our repertoire so far...

I'm A Little Teapot
The Farmer In The Dell
Mary Had A Little Lamb
On Top Of Spaghetti
Three Blind Mice
Only A Boy Named David
Jesus Loves Me
The Itsy Bitsy Spider
Hickory Dickory Dock
I love You, You Love Me
Old McDonald Had a Farm
B-I-N-G-O
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
the ABC song
10 Little Indians
Do Your Ears Hang Low
Baby Bumble Bee
Ive Been Workin On The Railroad
The Wheels On The Bus
This Old Man

What were some of your favorite childhood songs that I forgot?

  1. Can you call me around 7:30am ET and sing this. Much better than my beeping alarm!

  2. I'm glad to know I"m not the only one who sings to wake up the kiddos! Tell them it could be worse...my dad used to fling the door open, flip the lights on and yell "Get up soldier! UP UP UP! HOOAH!" Yes, he was a Marine.

You must add "John Jacob Jingleheimerschmidt" to your list..that's one of our favorites. And "Do Your Ears Hang Low."

  3. I don't think it sounds unpleasant. (How's that for being pc?)

But I don't think that would get my daughter up. I usually start with a pleasant "time to get up". Then I hit the bathroom, if she's still not up I get more stern. Then it gets louder. Most days I've woke up the whole house before she gets out of bed. My daughter has to get up first because her school bus comes at 7am for her hour and a half bus ride. I don't understand why she just doesn't get up. She can sleep on the bus. I'm sure part of it is her meds, but part of it also is the usual teenage snarkyness and unwillingness to listen. But it's very frustrating because I don't NEED to get up that early. The only reason I have to get up that early is to make sure she gets up and catches her bus.

  4. Dude. You do NOT have a bad singing voice, as me and your bff Marlene have been telling you for years.

That being said, I cringed when I heard this because I remember you waking ME up like this when I was little. Have I mentioned how much I hated you when we were younger?? Oh yeah - YES I HAVE.

    - your spoiled rotten, "city girl", little sister

  5. Enjoy reading your blog. Can't imagine why your kids don't enjoy being awakened with such unique singing. :)

  7. I thought you sounded great!

    so how about
    Singing in the Rain,
The Green Grass Grew All Around and Around,
    You are My Sunshine,
    and
Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree. (Maybe this song isn't well-known so here is a link to learn it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXfYuGDmdTA It's a daily sing in our family.)
Oh and my two year old loves the Beach Boys, Barbara Ann.

  8. I liked it. I'm not sure I would want to wake up that way, but as a torture device for children- perfect (kidding!) I thought you sounded great!

    How about :
10 little monkeys jumping on the bed -
one fell off and bumped his head-
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said -
No more monkeys jumping on the bed!

    My son's fav to sing
    "I had a little turtle,
    his name was Tiny Tim,
I put him in the bathtub, to see if he could swim.
He drank up all the water,
he ate a bar of soap,
and now he's stuck in bed -with bubbles in his throat...
bubble, bubble, bubble,bubble,bubble... (and on and on...)
    POP!

  9. I am 24 now, but my mother would sing to wake us girls us. I had two younger sisters. She wasn't made to be a singer, but she sings anyway and everywhere. I used to be annoyed by it. Im not a morning person, so being woken up in the first place was bad. But now that I am older and out of the house, I will admit I miss it. I don't sing in public or even in front of the love of my life. But there is still hope for me yet. Keep singing!!

  10. Ms HH,
Your singing is not bad. Now you probably couldn't get a recording contract but I'd rather hear that than any ol' alarm clock. Tell them to be grateful you are a cheerful mother.

Only song I can remember from childhood that doesn't seem to be there is Little Bunny Foo Foo. My sis would sing it ALL the time. Drove Mom nuts in church. I'll have to think some more. I can hear one in the back of my mind and can't quite grasp it. HMM.

  11. You sound just fine. Don't listen to the little hecklers. ;)

I think you should add "Skin-a-ma-rink" I just love that song. :)

  12. Totally NOT child abuse :) I don't know what your kids are complaining about. You sound fine.

  13. You could make a singing alarm clock with that song on it and wake up children all over the country and make a bundle!

  14. I personally think they ought to be very grateful for such a fun Mom. :) You see, I too am a singer. I used the same tune you did for getting up for the seatbelt song. If you forgot to put your seatbelt on, you had to sing:
I have to put on my seatbelt.
I have to put on my seatbelt.
I have to put on my seatbelt because it is the law. Because it is the law, because it is the law. I have to put on my seatbelt because it is the law.

Or if you forgot to lock the car door you had to sing this to the lone ranger (I think that is the tune) tune:
Lock my door, Lock my door,Lock my door, door door. Lock my door, Lock my door, Lock my door, door door... anyway you get the picture.

    Sing on my friend!!!

  15. LoL! I LOVE IT! My mom would sing my brother and I awake on her days off of work. We didn't appreciate it at the time, but thinking about it now makes me smile!

  16. My three year old said your singing was "pretty" and made me play it twice. Now she's running around singing "It's time to get up in the morning" just like you.

  17. OH!!! I have a solution for the ungrateful little turd. Give him an alarm clock and if he can get up by himself he won't have to hear you sing. That'll show him!

  18. I get my songs, or did, from Australian Playschool. They have a website.

    http://www.abc.net.au/children/play/

If you click on eggs on that page they tell you the songs they are using that day. Each day you'll get a different song.

  19. I thought it sounded just fine! :) I think my daughter would throw a shoe at me if I tried to wake her up like this though... She hits the snooze at least 10 times before she gets up!

  20. "How much is that doggy in the window? The one with the waggly tail"...my favorite childrens song. Your blog cracks me up...it's nice to know I'm not the only one who enjoys driving their kids nuts.

  21. For a minute there, I had some major deja vu... because I used to waken my kids up with the same song! ( but you have a better singing voice than I do)
    They hated me.

Now, when I've had a long hectic day and I want my guy to go home, I start singing "I'm in the mood for loooooooove, simply because you're near me".
And he usually makes a break for it when I hit that high note on "me"

  22. I am so glad I'm not the only one that sings. I can do a great Snow White impression, ask my daughter, she makes me do it for all her friends. I usually sing when I'm a little stressed. For some reason it helps relieve the stress.

As far as songs go...Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world. Red, yellow, black and white they are precious in his sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world!

  23. autumn leaves...i learnt it in grade 1 and i sang it to boy when i was pregnant with him so there'd be a comfort song (theory that singing it would sooth the savage crying infant - it had varying degrees of success)

  24. I sing, too. And yes, my singing is not the most beautiful.

Your blog rocks, by the way!

  25. OMG! That totally rocks LOL
I'd love a wake up call from ya like that. It made me smile! :D

  26. Working my way through high school and college, I was a night and weekend manager at the local Pizza Hut. One of my favorite delivery drivers, Beau, was always late to work on Saturday mornings, so I would call him and sing, "Wake up, Wake up, It's time to come to the Pizza Hut."
So, I relate, though yours is much better.

  27. I think you have a terrific voice! Honestly! You sound a bit like, but tons better than, Ethel Merman, and look how big she made it. Keep croonin', dollface!

  28. You don't sound that bad. They would wake up grumpy no matter how they were awakened.

Here Comes Peter Cottontail (or Santa Claus) and all those other wonderful holiday jingles--Jingle Bells, (also the Batman Smells one), Rudolph, Head and Shoulders Knees and Toes, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, London Bridge, Ring Around the Rosy, The Wheels on the Bus. I'm sure there are others but as soon as I start to think, my mind goes blank.

  29. Dana, this is my first visit to your place and I had the most wonderful time!

My youngest rarely has patience for my "quirkiness", but I keep telling her she will be fallin' out of the nest here in a few short months...and she may just find that she actually misses it all. Hmmmm...come to think of it...maybe I am just tryin' to convince myself...lol.

I WILL be returning AND... I WILL be adding you to my blogroll (hope you don't mind).

    Thanks for an enjoyable visit.

  30. Jesus Loves Me, This Little Light of Mine, are about the only ones I can think of that you didn't list. We are teaching these to our granddaughter now. Just introduced I'm a Little Teapot this past weekend. She's two. Margie

  31. Ten green bottles

ten little angels all dressed in red...

The sun has got his hat on, hip hip hip horray....

My 6 year old likes, Hey hey we're the monkees!

As for the 'turd' still in bed, tell him sweetly, PLEASE be there when I get back with some ice!

  32. If only I was given the opportunity to wake my boys up. Instead, I'm awakened every morning to shouting from my two and a half year old, "Eat! Eeeeeeat! Mommy? I hunnry."

I like to sing High Hopes (What Laverne and Shirley sang) and Grandma's Feather Bed.

  33. Keep up your 'quirkiness' My Grandma used to do silly things such as sing to them to wake up my mom and her brothers and other silly things that used to make them think she was a little ..off. After she passed away I decided to call mom and wake her up with one of Grammies songs. It really made her day.
