The Taste of Comfort

Last night, we had one of my favorite comfort foods for dinner.

Tender, juicy, slow roasted, pot roast
with roasted carrots, huge mushrooms,
onions, & fingerling potatoes.
mmmmmmmm!

Top it all with a rich and thick homemade gravy, and I'm in comfort-food heaven!

Pot roast brings back memories of Sunday After-Church dinner.
Walking in the back door and smelling the wonderful meal long before you reached for your fork.
It's warm, filling, honest food. (if the term "honest food" makes any sense at all!)

I have many favorite comfort foods.
some sweet,
some savory,
some simple,
some complex,

I always find it interesting what foods other people consider comforting.

So today, It's all about you!

I wanna know...
What does comfort taste like to you?
And Why?

  1. Every Sunday at Granny's was pot roast, potatoes, and carrots along with a huge serving of red beans that had been in the slow cooker all night long the night before.

This past Saturday, we cooked roast in the solar oven out in our side yard. Yummy!

  2. chicken pot pie. not the kind that most people think of baked in a pie shell, but more like chicken and dumplings. i have since found out it's really called chicken bot boi and along the way it has become chicken pot pie. the dough is more like a noodle than a dumpling. it gets rolled out flat and cut into 1 inch squares and they swell and expand a good bit. my mom used to only make it when we had company from out of town because it takes a lot of time to make it from scratch, but it is very good. besides the chicken and noodles, there are thick cut potatoes and onions in it as well. i developed a taste for onions because of this meal.

  3. It sort of depends on why I need comforting. Sometimes its a Boston Cream Pie. Sometimes its scrambled eggs with hot dogs.

Other times its a nice big barely warmed still mooing porterhouse steak.

Then again.. Pot roast sounds delicious! (I'll pass on the mushrooms though. Never been a fan of cooked mushrooms)

  5. Fried chicken (it helps to know the chicken's name) mashed taters, green beans, copper penny carrots, biscuits and cream gravy. Oh and Angel Food cake for dessert.
    I guess I'm missing my Grandma. ;-(

  6. I never had Sunday dinner at Grandma's. My single Grandma lived next door to us in a small house so all family gatherings were in our house. My other Grandma(step)moved away when I was 6. So my comfort food was my Mom's Mushroom Steak. Browned pieces of round steak put in the crock pot with cream of mushroom soup. Comes out SO tender! And you have your gravy already made.

  7. Pasta!!! My favorite "everything will be all right food" is pasta. I generally prefer cream sauces to tomato sauces.

I have no good reason. It just is.

  8. Savory: Mac and Cheese - the cheesier the better

Sweet: Ice cream - lots of chocolate and lots of "stuff" in it.

  12. Ironic in that my wife and I just had pot roast this past Monday.

A 4-pound boneless chuck roast, cooked low and slow for 5 hours in a cast-iron Dutch oven.

Then served with potatoes, carrots, celery , baby bellas --- and a side of collard greens cooked with a few slices of country ham.

Does food get any more "comfortable" than that? I think not.

    Great post, by the way.
