This is my lettuce.I've never grown lettuce that isn't a leaf variety.

Head Size: 4.5"... ummm Not quite!
These suckers are pushing 3 and a half FEET tall!I think I'm doing it wrong...

Your not doing it wrong but you can pinch leaves and top the plant as you go. The longer the lettuce stays on the plant the bitterer it gets. As soon as my lettuce starts spouting we start eating and it will just keep growing. If you wait you just have too much lettuce and bitter lettuce at that.
As a city girl, I know absolutely nothing about growing lettuce, but ummm... your lettuce definitely doesn't match the description on the package...

I agree with Bobbi. You need to eat the lettuce sooner. Don't count on getting heads leaves are good. Yours looks close to going to seed.
I eat mine the second I see leaves that are big enough to pick... because otherwise mine looks like yours!
I think that they look fine. 4.5" in circumference is the head size around not height. You're gonna have yummy salads for a long time! I recommend getting a vacuum sealer. They will keep your lettuce for a LONG time as long as it's not wet inside. Just tear the leaves and put them in the bag dirty. Wash them before you eat. YUMMY!
I am so jealous that you have lettuce - actually that you have a garden! Living in a townhome is not the ideal situation to nurture my inner-farm-girl. Love your blog! I look forward to your posts - thanks for the smiles :)

Hmm, looks pretty odd. How does it taste? I've planted this same lettuce before, but it never did this! It's a bit scary! Think I'll stick with heirloom seeds, these new improved varieties are getting out of hand! LOL
