It's been in the same place for 4 years, yet he still tries....
Kinda sad really...
Good thing he is cute!

Don't Ask Me How I Know This...

But, if your barn cat has a littler of kittens on your porch,
And they are all girls except for one adorable male,
And you don't want any more girl cats around because you don't want more kittens around,
You fall in love with and decide to keep the lone cuddly, loving, sweet boy kitten,

It will be the first animal on your farm that you run over with your own truck.

Makes Me Happy

Collecting still warm eggs, laid by "the girls" each morning...
Yes, it annoys me that they refuse to use the perfectly safe and fluffy nest boxes to lay their eggs...
Yes, I wonder why they can't all lay in the same area instead of in the boat, the tool bench and under the Gardenia bushes.

The joy and satisfaction of feeding my family eggs from our own hens,
Knowing exactly what they ate,
Knowing exactly what they did NOT consume,
Makes me very VERY happy!

Introducing..... JERKY!

Today is an exciting day!

I have spent the past three days obsessively checking one of my cows butts.
I know, I know, that sounded weird.

But, you see, The smarter than your average cow, Hershey, managed to escape her pasture on Halloween last year and decided to "frolic" with our neighbors Bull.

Um, yeah.... I swear I didn't raise her that way!
So, in classic After-School Special style, she found herself young, unwed and pregnant.

It took some time, and it took a lot of love, but we came to embrace the life growing inside of her.
We HAD to be there for her!
I mean... That Dead-Beat Bovine next door never even gave her another look!

After months and months of waiting.....

Let me introduce...

"Jerky"

Ain't he cute?

Here is the proud Momma with her new
"bundle of bull"

Hershey is being a very good Momma.

And we happen to think he is adorable!

Well... everyone thinks he's adorable except his Aunt Paris...

I think we may have made a bad decision letting her witness her sister giving birth...

She has been hiding in the bushes for three hours!
Oh well....
Maybe she'll remember that when she gets in the mood to "frolic".

He May Not Be The Sharpest Tool In The Shed...

He may always look incredibaly worried...

He may have an unhealthy obsession with dirty underwear...

He may refuse to be house-trained, even though he's 6 months old...

But Guss sure is cute!

Gone to the dogs...

Thats whats happened 'round our farm this week.

They are slowly taking over!
There is Guss The Pug Puppy.
Who, while he is the cutest thing on Earth, serves no real purpose on the farm.
He's here for pure entertainment.

Otis the Boston Terrier.
He has taken it upon himself to rid our farm of flies.
I swear he looks possessed when he see's a fly!
He freezes and waits for it to land...
Then POUNCE!!

Oh yeah.... He'll retrieve anything you decide to throw with EXTREME excitement!

Otis is the dog that proved me wrong when I said I didn't like little dogs.
Now I love em!

Two weeks ago, Sampson joined the flock.

Literally! He's a Great Pyrenees and will live in the hen house/yard with the poultry.
Yep! This soon to be HUGE, polar bear like, white dog will grow up thinking he is a bird.
Great Pyrenees are wonderful Livestock guardians.
Protecting the poultry is his job.

This is Cecile.
Cecile is one of our Great Danes, she was born right here on the farm.

Cecile has had a problem.
Cecile doesn't like being alone.
With Sampson the Chicken-Dog living in the hen house.
And Guss and Otis warming feet in our beds.
When Arlo, our other Great Dane died last month, Cecile became depressed.
Cecile became VERY depressed.
She would not eat.
She would not play.
She was mourning.

Nothing we tried could lift her up out of her dark place.
She went from a sweet happy-go-lucky dog to a withering bag of bones.
It was heartbreaking to see.

*Sigh* This is Anna.
Anna came to our house yesterday.
She is half Australian Shepard & half Lab.

Even at her tender 8 week old age, Anna has a job!
Anna is an anti-depressant.
Anna lives with Cecile now.

Cecile ate her first full meal right after Anna moved in!
And our sweet bouncy Great Dane is Back!
Thanks Anna!

Have you ever tried to take a picture of a bouncing 120lb Great Dane?

If not.. prepare for spazzed-out, fuzzy, blobs.
Will try to get some of the Happy Girl pictures today.

Move over John & Kate plus 8...

What would you think if you got a phone call from the US Government at 5:03am on a Wednesday Morning?
Lots of things ran through my head...

Did I mess up our taxes??
Do I have a traffic ticket I forgot about??
Is someone I know in jail??
Did someone report me for ripping that tag off my mattress??
I was at a loss...

Luckily, it was just the Postmaster from the Post Office, telling me I had a package... .
A very noisy package.
Would I please come get it?...
Right NOW?!
Otis the Boston Terrier was intrigued.
He was suspicious of the noisy box.
He inspected it the second we brought it into the house.

It was the chicks and ducks!
The cute day-old baby chicks and ducklings are here!
Yippee!!

Is there anything cuter than the first baby chicks and ducklings of the season?
I think not!

Guss the Pug puppy has never seen day-old chicks and ducklings..
He thought they looked tasty.
hmmm we'll have to work on that.

More pics soon and I'll introduce you to the three other new critters that have joined out crew this week too!

Yep... that's 63 new additions to our family this week alone!

Busy & interesting times folks....

Yawn...

There are critters passed out all over the house.

Guss the Pug Puppy is snoring on the back of the couch.

Otis has melted into his dog bed.

Why are my usually hyper-spastic freaky dogs so sluggish?

Do we have a gas leak?

Did I get sick of tripping over the little stinkers and slip em some of The Little-Foreman-in-Pinks Benadryl?

Maybe these pictures were taken late at night?

Nope....

The boys had their first trip to the beach!
From the look of things...
There will be many more!
They had a BLAST!

Daily Farm Randomness...

The Gestational period for a cow = 284 days,
or about 9 months & 10 days.

This means our first ever calf is due on
August 10th or 11th...
The little slut snuck out to visit the neighbors Bull last Halloween!

I really thought we raised her better than that!!

We were so ashamed,
we considered sending her to a barn for wayward heifers,
but decided to support her in her journey to single parenthood.

And, of course, the Bull has had nothing to do with her since their late-night romp!
I guess she has to learn the hard way.

This Bothers Me.

When there is a puppy in the house, you can't help but notice that they have an uncanny ability to fall asleep anywhere.

They, like all babies, sleep a lot.
But sometimes you have to wonder...

How can this be comfortable?

How can a puppy who can hear me roll over in my bed, on the other side of the house at 2:00am so he can start crying and howling for attention, not notice the fact that his face is being smashed into the hardwood floor?
How can he not notice the fact that his face is NOT enjoying the same schmooshy-soft dog bed that the rest of his body is snuggling into?
It CAN'T be comfortable!
This bothers me..
Not enough to stop taking pictures and giggling so I can help him ....
But it does bother me.

Is There Anything Better?

Than Puppy Breath?
I picked him up yesterday.
The whole drive home I couldn't stop thinking about my English Bulldog "Angus".
Angus has been gone to doggie heaven for 4 years now.

Those big eyes,
That schmooshed-in nose,
The loud snore while he slept.
This puppy has so many of the same characteristics!

You sent in so many great suggestions for names!
We had narrowed it down to Rufus & Guido.
We were gonna wait to see his personality before we decided for sure.

After meeting him, we just knew his name!
Gus! He is a Gus!

Otis the Wonder Dog
is amused by his new playmate...
Until Gus tried to nurse.
oops!

This is the adorable position that you are most likely to find Gus.
He is NOT used to hardwood floors!
His front feet sprawl apart and he pushes himself around with his back legs.
He kinda looks like he is skiing!
Too Cute!!

I'm gonna try to get a video of the little goof floor-skiing today.
Until then, I'm drunk on puppy breath!

A Secret.... And I Need Your Help.

A baby brother for Otis The Killer Boston Terrier!!
He comes to the farm next week.

Now.. we need a name!
Something cute like Otis.
He is the breeders favorite, and so far, they call him Sputnik, I love the name, but also would like something that goes better with Otis.
We need a new name to add to Sputnik!
Ideas?

Just in case you were wondering...

Hi, My name is Tom.

I'm taking over Dana's computer while she is napping from her huge Thanksgiving Day Dinner.
I just wanted to let you all know that I won!!
Thanksgiving is over, and guess what?? I'm still here!

I can still chill with my buds.
I'm still strutting my stuff for the ladies.
I am almost too handsome for words.
Just in case you were wondering how we turkeys are doing after the BIG Turkey Day.
We are fine! So There!

If you need me, I can be found hangin' with my homies.
...Until Next November...
Then you won't be able to find us!!

Spastic Little Buggers.

I don't know how these little suckers managed to hang on through 100mph winds of the hurricane, but they are here to stay!
I just love watching hummingbirds....
One minute they are fighting and chasing everyone away from their beloved Kool-Aid nectar (AKA Hummingbird crack)
The next minute they are all best friends, zipping around chattering to each other and sharing like good little birdies.
Hmmm they sound kinda like my young-folk!
Man!
If I could have just a teeny bit of their energy and speed I'd be unstoppable!
And this house would be clean!
12 days no power
+ hurricane damage
+ 5 kids
-----------------------------
= 12 weeks worth of clean-up!
I wonder if they could be trained to do windows?

It's almost obscene

You just never know what you'll run into when you step out of the back door at our place.
But this scene made me pause.
It made me shudder.
It made me run inside and grab my camera.
There is something very wrong and down-right disturbing about this.

As a mother who has nursed 4 babies, I cringe at the sight of this.
I mean... come on! These kittens are almost as big as Momma is!!
(with the exception of the little calico orphan we found in our pontoon boat, who she adopted as if he was her own)
And she is still letting them nurse!

Just yesterday we were watching these very same cats hunt down and kill barn mice, and now they are nursing like new-born kittens?
Come on Momma!

It's time to cut the cord!

geesh....
