Purging makes me sick

Not THAT kinda purging!
I have complained, bitched, cried shared about the fact that my house is too small and too full of both people and "stuff" numerous times.

Well... The time has come for me to stop whining and actually DO something about it.
I mean.. I have TONS of cleaning up to do from the hurricane....
I might as well go a little bit deeper and really get things under control in this house!
I can't get rid of any of the people here... yet.
So I gotta do something about all this stuff!

Wanna know a little secret?
I am a horrible thrower-outer! (but a great word maker-uper!)
I have reasons to keep all my stuff!
I know.. I know.. the rule is if you haven't used it in a year.. Get rid Of It!
Yeah.. that sounds easy doesn't it?
Not for me!

I start to go through a box or a cupboard, and find all the cool stuff I forgot I had!
And Hey I might need it sometime!

Or, more often, I get the cleaning bug, and dump out the cupboards, or a closet with the best intentions of getting it organized and clean...
Then I look at the HUGE pile and get totally overwhelmed, give up and shove it all back in worse shape than it was before I started! (I so totally suck like that!)

This time I'm gonna DO it!
I am gonna throw out or sell everything that I haven't used in over a year.
Oooh scary!

I have boxes.
I have big trash bags.
Tomorrow, I start with going though all my books. **gulp**
My Books??? Did I just type that?!!?
yup... it's gotta be done.

Pray for me...
Or encourage me...
or send me some cheesecake ok?

I'm gonna need it!

More soon. maybe some before and after pics?
hmmm will think about that one.

Enjoyed your blog. It's hard to clean out especially when you're a keeper but if you ask yourself will I actually use it, do I love it...don't keep things out of guilt or because you think it's what you are supposed to do. We "right-sized" this year to a much smaller house and had to do a major clean out. It has been so nice in our smaller place surrounded by the things we love. Books were hard for me too, I donated them to our library and freecyle is awesome!

I hesitated to offer while I was over this evening, but I thought about it on the long drive home (across Houston, for those reading along) and I'd like to help! Because I always want to throw away and clean up your house, though I've gotten used to hiding the urge at your house for the same reason you do - it's overwhelming!

Anyway... what if I can over next weekend? I dunno about the WHOLE weekend, but I bet I can definitely help out!

Wow, good luck with that. I have a 4 bedroom house, just me and Grandpa now, and it is bulging at the seams. If you can do this maybe I can. Then again, maybe not. I love my junk!

Don't know if it will help, but I have the same problem. I have always found that instead of throwing things out I feel much better about giving them away. If I know someone is going to enjoy my books, clothes, cd's, etc. I feel better about them leaving my house permanently. Another good motivator is $$$$. If I can get a good buck for it at the flea market or on ebay, than I don't mind getting rid of it either.

I never throw things away either. I have gotten better over the years but I want to keep my stuff. I doubt anyone would know of this problem because I just don't buy anything new so everything tends to have a home. But throwing things out especially my kids stuff kills me.

I used to be a keeper of everything, then everything became my keeper so I got rid of it. It wasn't easy because its such a psychological thing, especially with the "stuff" that had a memory attached to it. But once I started getting rid of stuff it became easier with each item I chucked. I was determined NEVER to be like my grandmother, who is a pack rat of the grandest proportions. She turned her entire upstairs, which once had four bedrooms, into a barely negotiable path. Years and years and years of STUFF!

Getting rid of things can be emotionally cleansing. Good luck!

I started doing that this past weekend. I got rid of some things that I actually collect. Now that's hard. Same with me about the books. I just don't have it in me to throw them away. So, I asked two neighbors if they wanted them. Finally unloaded them. I still have a long way to go on the uncluttering though. But, hey, I made a start. Margie

I went through a bunch of stuff that we had stored in our basement and decluttered. I felt so much better when I was done. I actually felt like I had more stuff when I was finished because I didn't have to plow through the junk in my cupboards to get to the "good" towels, pots, etc.
