Worker #2 came home from Afghanistan last-night.
He will be home for two weeks for R&R.
I am surprised....
By how tired he looks...
By how thin his face is...
I am surprised how big his muscles have become....
And how badly he smells because he hasn't had a shower in a month.
I am surprised by the stories he had to share,
And how he told these stories as if he was talking about a trip he took to the grocery store to pick up milk...
I am surprised that he walked into our bedroom asking for his old .410 shotgun because he misses the constant presence of his weapon and can't sleep without one by his side...
I am happy to have him home...
I am happy he is safe for the next two weeks....
But... I am surprised by the man who came home, when I sent my boy away.

I recently experienced the same "phenomenon" while spending time with my son-in-law. It was unnerving to me until I realized the distancing is necessary for his survival. He is currently finishing his second tour in Afghanistan and should be home very soon. Blessings to you and yours.
I am thankful he is able to be home and safe for at least two weeks, Dana. Yes, he is indeed, a man now. A man to be proud of, and man I will be praying for. Have a wonderful two weeks!
Wow your words are so powerful.... Bittersweet . I also have a son fixin to deploy out of Italy to the front for his first tour. Yes I'm scared as hell for him. He will be home for a visit beforehand. He also sleeps with his weapon. His Pollice Chief father did too- until he was killed in the line of duty by a drunk driver. Men like our sons carry the Honor Code in their hearts I have to remember that God gave him to me as a gift and now I'm gonna give him back for awhile. I trust God he loves him more than I do--if that's possible ! Thanks for sharing... Praying for y'all
I was so touched by this--I happened upon it by "accident"--and am thankful. God bless you and all the mothers who have sons serving in Harm's way....either as soldiers, or firemen or policemen! They offer so much for so little appreciation....as do their mothers. Marilyn aka Baglady
